Giving Tuesday is celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in an effort to give back to the causes we care about year-round. Giving Tuesday (website linked here) was initially started, "...in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good." Regardless of what that good looks like, Giving Tuesday is a chance to pour back into our communities.
At the Students with Disabilities Advocacy Group, we are asking you to invest in disabled success! Hear from our Advocacy Director to see how SDAG gives back to our disabled members and advocates.
How SDAG invests in Disabled Success
by Harley Grey Meyer, Advocacy Director
The Students with Disabilities Advocacy Group (SDAG) is an upcoming grassroots, peer-support-based nonprofit by and for disabled students.
By donating to our campaign, you will support our current advocacy efforts at our home campus (Georgia Southern University)! Your donation will also help us as we expand to other universities!
SDAG's primary goal is to offer a safe haven and community for disabled students. We welcome and support students and community members with all kinds of disabilities, including physical, invisible, and learning disabilities. We work to support those with neurodivergent conditions and mental illnesses, seeing as these can often be disabling.
As someone who previously would have never considered myself to be disabled, SDAG has gifted me a community full of support unlike I have ever known. I have since been able to receive additional diagnoses, advocate for myself for academic accommodations, and reach a level of self-acceptance I couldn’t have imagined. This is why community is so important.
Our secondary goal is educating and advocating for disabilities, neurodivergent conditions, and mental illnesses. There is always more educating to do, both for those inside and outside of the disabled community. I learn new things every semester, as do the numerous nondisabled allies who join our meetings. Discrimination often comes from a fear of what is unknown; education combats this.
We are filling gaps for disabled students trying to navigate higher education, which is wrought with barriers and unwritten rules. We do this through community building and open conversations surrounding disability issues. This often looks like more informal gatherings like community events and group dinners. This is also done through our “Disabilities After Dark” events which are discussion-based; previous topics have included chronic pain and the intersection of disability and LGBTQ+ pride.
Above all, we care about being a supportive community and empowering students to achieve anything they dream of.
